Build Your Forecasting Expertise with Itron’s Energy Forecasting Workshops

July 29, 2026

You’re invited to join Itron from Sept. 1–3, 2026, at the AC Hotel by Marriott Boston Downtown, for 2.5 days of practical forecasting education designed for utility professionals.

Electrification, distributed energy resources, behind-the-meter solar, energy efficiency programs and changing customer behavior are reshaping utility forecasting. Itron’s Energy Forecasting Workshops help professionals navigate these challenges through expert-led instruction, real-world case studies and hands-on exercises.

For more than 45 years, Itron has helped utilities improve forecast accuracy and strengthen planning. Hundreds of forecasting professionals have gained skills they can apply immediately in their organizations. Attendees can choose from three concurrent workshops, each tailored to a specific forecasting discipline and experience level.

Find the Right Workshop for Your Role
New to Forecasting? Start with Energy Forecasting 101. Designed for analysts, planners and managers with little or no forecasting experience, Energy Forecasting 101 introduces the methods used throughout the utility industry.

Led by Eric Fox, director of forecasting at Itron, the workshop uses hands-on exercises to show participants how to build regression-based sales and load forecasting models.

Participants will learn:

  • Univariate and multivariate forecasting techniques
  • Regression fundamentals and forecasting theory
  • Forecast decomposition and residual analysis
  • Model and forecast statistics
  • Weather normalization methods
  • Scenario development and model-building best practices

No advanced statistical background is required. Attendees leave with a practical understanding of forecasting models and how to apply them in utility environments.

Strengthen Long-Term Planning with Fundamentals of Sales and Demand Forecasting
For professionals responsible for customer, sales and demand forecasting, this workshop explores methodologies that support utility planning and financial decisions.

Led by Michael Russo, senior forecast consultant at Itron, attendees will develop, evaluate and improve long-term forecast models while accounting for electrification, electric vehicle adoption and behind-the-meter solar. Through hands-on exercises participants will learn how to:

  • Weather normalize sales and evaluate customer usage trends
  • Develop customer class sales forecast models
  • Identify and address regression modeling challenges
  • Estimate peak demand forecasts
  • Account for efficiency programs and technology adoption
  • Evaluate the impact of solar generation, EVs and electrification programs

Advance Your Skills with Short-Term Forecasting
Designed for professionals developing daily, hourly or day-ahead load forecasts, the Short-Term Forecasting workshop focuses on operational forecasting needs.

Led by Rich Simons, senior forecast consultant at Itron, the course covers techniques used by utilities, independent system operators and energy retailers to forecast load from five minutes to seven days ahead. Attendees will build models, explore data and apply techniques that can improve forecast performance and confidence, gaining hands-on experience with:

  • Regression and neural network forecasting frameworks
  • Statistical analysis and interpretation
  • Weather and calendar variable specification
  • Daily and hourly forecasting approaches
  • Data visualization and model interpretation
  • Techniques for addressing behind-the-meter solar generation
